Are The New Silicone Breast Implants Safe?

The number of women who are getting their breasts implanted is on a steady increase. But the most important question is, are these breast implants safe?

Statistics prove that as many as 203310 women had breast implants done in 2000 as against 82975 in 1997. The history of breast implants date back as early as 1960. The kind of complications that may be feared in such the process can be minor as well as serious. Minor ones may include infections.

But a more serious side effect can be syndrome of toxic shock which can be so serious that it can even cause death. There may be others like pain, losing sensation, asymmetry and scaring. If these happen, another surgery may be needed to restore things to normal. Auto immune syndromes such as mental confusion and fatigue are also common.

Since foreign bodies are implanted, the body may reject it. In such cases, scar tissues may form. There are even cases of implants that break inside the breast. This makes a re-surgery necessary. Breast implants are not known to cause breast cancer but they surely make it difficult to detect tumors that may develop in the breasts.

In spite of all these issues, more recent studies reveal that the risk factors have greatly reduced. Most plastic surgeons agree that it is safer to use saline implants than silicon gel. Silicon gel was removed from the market because of fears linked to its usage. But in 2006, the FDA again gave it approval and since then, the number of women using it has increased.

The two kinds of implants in the market are silicon gel and saline implant. One of the most important concerns regarding the usage of breast implants is that it is not permanent. This makes a re-surgery necessary, which increases the risk factors twofold.

In spite of all these known complications, more and more women are opting for implants. According to plastic surgeon, Dr. Vag of Mumbai's Hiranandani Hospital, more and more girls are opting for breast implants. Most of the girls are as young as sixteen years of age. A reason for this mounting trend among young girls can be attributed to their longing to enter the glamour industry or the modeling worlds. So they are easily lured by new inventions that promise a new look.

Breast enlargement pills, gels, creams, oils and even pumps are safer options as compared to implants. They are cheaper and most importantly, they are safe, as most of them are herbal products. Breast implants are not permanent. But as against this, other options are permanent. So once the desired effect is achieved, one can stop it altogether.

The only advantage that implants have over the others is that the results can be had almost immediately. So finally, if you ask me are breast implants safe? I would say absolute safety cannot be guaranteed but absolute quality can be!
